Transmission problem
1988 Nissan Sentra 4 cyl Front Wheel Drive Manual 232000 miles

I was driving to work this morning and when I approached a red light I depressed the clutch and heard a "popping" or "tinking" noise. I worked the clutch pedal several times and it made the noise again, then I stopped, depressed the clutch, and waited for the green light.
When I started off in first gear it worked fine, then as I depressed the pedal to shift to 2nd there was a final "snap" and the clutch went to the floor without resistance (other than the return spring). I had to pull to the side (obviously) and checked under the dash at the top of the clutch pedal swing arm. I could see that the cable was still attached, but when I pulled on the cable with my fingers it was 'free' and pulled without resistance.
Is this a job I can do at home? I'm a little strapped for cash and I'd like to do this economically, if possible. Can you advise me how difficult it would be? I'm not ASE certified but I do know my way around a car fairly well (can do oil changes, spark plugs, etc.).
