i just changed the starter in my truck. everything went smooth but now it does not idle at all. will start every time with gas petal assistance and will drive fine , when foot is off the petal it dies. i looked for something i might have disconnected but found nothing

Look for a disconnected vacuum hose, try raising the idle speed by turning the idle screw and recheck the ignition timing.

idle screw had no effect . vac hoses check out

What type of fuel system do you have - Carb or EFI?

carb . i looked again for any loose hoses , but found none. are there any wires that could effect the idle like that

The choke plate could be sticking not opening also check the PCV and EGR valves
