Engine Performance problem

i bought my car for $400 to learn how to work on the car and its my everday car it was running fine when i got it but now it doesn't want to stay running . i spread starter fuild in the carb it started and ran great now after i left my aa meeting evertime i let off the gas it died on me can you please help me figure out the problem or at least some suggestions thank you for your time
