Transmission problem

I have an old car, just recently had the linkage cable replaced as the old one broke (couldnt slide the shifter into gear as it just kept sliding like butter back and forth). Just got the car back from the shop today after hours so I had no one to ask if this problem is normal?? Now when I go out and start the car up, the shifter (on the column) is very very stiff and hard to shift into drive,reverse and park....hope this all makes sense. Also, this is winter so I thought maybe its because something is COLD?? It wasnt hard to shift before, now its really stiff. any ideas?
