Engine Mechanical problem
1978 Chevy Blazer V8 Four Wheel Drive Automatic unknow miles

I bought my blazer off a guy and he said the guy before him put in a rebuilt engine. I have no clue if it was the original engine which was rebuilt, or one that was purchased already re-manufactured or whatever. I looked for a serial number or code but I couldn't find one. Where do I look for that if it exists, and what do I do afterwards to be able to tell what year the motor is?
