Engine Mechanical problem

Tried to jump my 65 beetle (6 volt) with 12 volt battery like last year (no problem last year). This time, I replaced the battery and cables, starter turned over fast, but no start. I noticed for the first time that when the key is in the start position, the oil and generator lights do not come on. Any ideas?

Maybe you burned up the bulbs putting 12 volts through the system, check them first, then use a test light to see if they are getting power with the key on
