How to Replace a Serpentine Drive Belt
To replace a car engine serpentine
belt is relatively simple that can be done in a few minutes with everyday tools
in most cases. The main belt drives many of the
engine accessories are supplies with
power by the serpentine belt.
This belt is driving by the lower pulley that is connected to the
harmonic balancer or vibration
dampener. These belts come in almost every size and width. Both are very important
as the engine design is meant to only have one size and width belt. The length of
the belt determines the tension held on the belt by the
belt tensioner.
The number of grooves in the belt is important because the surface area is designed
to hold at a predetermined tension. Always replace the belt with the proper amount
of grooves on the replacement belt. A serpentine or multi rib belt is a
regular maintenance
item. Inspect the belt on your engine regularly, check for missing parts of the
belt both on the out surface and inner grooves. After the belt has been removed
inspect the drive and accessory pulleys and clean or replace as needed if damage
is observed.
