Coolant Maintenance Tips

Maintaining your vehicle to prevent spending money on repairs.

There is an old saying, "A hundred dollars in maintenance will save you a thousand dollars in repairs". Some people have been lead to believe, "oil changes are the only maintenance that they need to worry about”. Other important fluids and parts gets dis-regarded and this leads to repairs that could have been avoided. I have found that failing to change the anti-freeze is the most common and most costly. It results in repairs such as; full rebuilds, head gaskets, new radiator and other related repairs. This is a comparison between the cost of having your anti-freeze serviced as opposed to the repair costs. Doing required maintenance yourself is even cheaper, but may seem daunting. Remember, you have us at 2CarPros to get you through..

Anti-Freeze is as important as changing the engine oil.

I've had many customers put money into a vehicle that is not worth as much as the repair. It is a tough decision to either fix the car they have or spend money on a new car. The most extreme repair that can result from anti-freeze neglect is having to rebuild the engine. This occurs when anti-freeze has blown a head gasket and has leaks into the oil causing it to be diluted. This leads to internal damage from the the oil losing its' ability to protect the engine's vital parts.. It really gets bad when the rebuild requires a new engine block because of a crack in the coolant jacket of the engine. This is impossible to find before the engine is torn apart and it can be over-looked until the motor is put together. This is because a pressure test of the coolant jacket cannot be done until the engine has new gaskets and seals. Then, a material called, "block sealer", will usually fix the crack. It costs around $50 on average. So, you can see that not changing the anti-freeze in your vehicle is very important as it can be one of the most expensive, difficult and time consuming repairs.

Changing your anti-freeze is a cheap and simple way to avoid costly repairs.

Anti-freeze should be changed every 24,000 miles or two years depending upon the particular type used. Anti-freeze and distilled water in a ratio of 50/50 is what is used as the coolant in most engines. Anti Freeze is around $12 a gallon and distilled water is $2 for a gallon. This adds up to $14 and is enough to fill an average cars cooling system. This is peace of mind for two years that your engine is safe from damage by freezing at a cost $7 a year.

To have a repair shop, "Flush and Fill", the coolant can cost as much as $100.00 for trucks or high end automobiles which is $50.00 per year. An engine rebuild and cooling system pressure test including the, "Block Sealant", can exceed $5000.00 in some cases. So, for around $10.00 to $50.00 a year you can avoid repairs that will happen if you never replace the anti-freeze.

Maintenance gets shunned by consumers because a shop tells them it is needed. It is a sale that the shop is trying to get, however it is well justified. Even better is doing it yourself and having us here at 2CarPros to give you the feeling of self satisfaction that comes from keeping your vehicle well maintained.
